Conceived when the music of two continents coupled on the turf of a third, jazz keeps looking to its parents for renewal. Pianist Randy Weston, who died last year at the age of 92, drew freely on African idioms—Nigerian Highlife, Gnawan trance music—and this tribute, in which the band of Malian pianist Seck will be joined by the free-jazz legend Shepp, looks a fitting one. —E.E
